These engines assume that if a particular site is having a relevant and quality content, the larger number of sites would link to you. You might be thinking that a large number of dummy sites linking to your site would help increase you rankings. Not any longer, my dear. While this procedure might not help in increasing rankings but it is definitely going to boost your chances of attracting penalty if search engines detect that you are using link farms to your benefit.
Then what do search engines actually count. Search engines usually count, in content links. Not only this, they are very strict about the words that surround the links. Let us understand this by an example, say you are running a jokes forum and you are linked to from a health blog, a simple link would carry less weight age than if your jokes forum was mentioned somewhere in the blog post. Also the anchor text has role to play in determining the value of the link. For example, have a look at this forum will have far less weight than, check out john’s jokes forum.
It is obvious that you can’t determine what other bloggers write about you and how do they link to you but for sure some home work regarding this can be done. Go to Google and search link:yourdomain.com/org/net or applicable extension. This will give the number and the list of people that are linking to your site. Now you can politely contact each of them to edit the anchor text as per your requirement.
