Let Cricket Be Cricket

Success of IPL has been the perfect reply to those people who initially doubted that how could a tournament so long would be able to sustain itself. People were crying that it would be impossible to bring in crowd for every match. All of them must have felt embarrassed about lectures they gave. Most of these lectures were based on the failure of the cricket world cup as a tournament. There were hardly any spectators in the matches once India and Pakistan failed to make the cut to super 8 stages.
Though it may not appear as such yet there is a very distinctive corporate side attached to cricket and its ethics. Most of the cricket players are rich and endorse n number of brands. Once these individuals fail or the tournament in which they are participating fails, the image that a player builds for the corporate sponsoring him also suffers. This only leads to players performing not that greatly under pressure. A larger part of this pressure comes from the corporate side. Take the example of IPL team Bangalore Royal Challengers. They have suffered 9 defeats in the 12 matches that they have played. This not only lowers the brand value of the team but also the corporate attached to it which in this case is Kingfisher. As a result there are rumors of the team owner not being satisfied with the captain and other team members.
This all is result of excessive money coming in to cricket. They players perform under added pressure and fail. What’s worse is the fact that there is no one to pull them out of this failure. Why can’t we just let cricket be cricket.
