Best Chrome Extensions for Enhancing Security

Google Chrome is one of the few web browsers that lets you add extensions to personalize the browser to your needs. Thanks to its open source structure ,  there are hundreds of extensions available for Chrome today. Most of these extensions are worth installing but every time you install one , it knocks a bit of your available RAM :( . Therefore it is important that users know which one is the best extension that solves their purpose.

Keeping this in mind, we have decided to publish a series of articles covering the best available Google Chrome extensions. Today in first installment of such articles we bring to you the list of best extensions for enhancing  your online security.

AdBlock: AdBlock is not exactly a security extension but it does come with the superpower of blocking  javascripts which are the latest weapon in the arsenal of hackers. In fact it only a few days back that some websites using WordPress Content Management System , were hacked and malware was injected into their footer file. One visiting such websites the visitors were prompted to buy a fake antivirus software.

Adblock for Chrome has all the features that you would have used in Ablock Plus addon for Firefox. It can block Facebook ads, Flash animations, and ads from all over the web which coincidentally pay our bills too :( . The browser is automatically updated with additions to the filter.

BugMeNot: Bug Me Not is an unique extension in every sense. It protects you from the advertising spam , generated by the sites that require registration to view content. If you come across any such website , just activate the Bug Me Not extension and it will try to figure out available registration information in its database. If the information is available it will use that to login into the website , thus protecting you from unnecessary registration process.

FlashBlock: Flash Block as the name suggests blocks all flash elements in a webpage. Adobe Flash is the gateway for all the interactive fun on a webpage and thus can easily be targeted because of vulnerabilities in it.

Flash Block works something like this. Initially it blocks all the flash element on a website. From thereon you can choose to activate the elements that you feel are safe and worth viewing . As you surf the web , FlashBlock remembers your decision and prepares a list of websites which it can trust and thus show Flash content. Flash content on all other website remains blocked.

LastPass: Last Pass is perhaps the best password manager available today in terms of security. What it does is that it  encrypts the passwords,  usernames and other login details , saves them locally and then sends them to Last Pass servers. This way not only your information is secure but also can be accessed across various computers connected to the internet.

SiteAdvisor: SiteAdvisor is a service which reports on the safety of web sites. Sites classified as phishing websites are classified and kept in blocked list. When you visit a website, it is scanned providing it a rating. You can always choose blocking of not allowed websites.

WOT: One more Chrome Extension that plays a role in securing your computer. WOT or Web of Trust is a chrome extension which rates the search results so that you know which website is clean and which website is infected with malware.
