Well, you want to start a blog. There’s a time when everyone is a newbie, I also was around 8-9 years back. I have made up few successful blogs and sold some of them, some shut down.
Starting a blog is very easy and it does not require any special skills. You can learn everything in few minutes and what I would say is that you should adapt to “Learning by Doing” philosophy.
This is a beginners guide on How to Start a blog
Before I tell you how to start a blog let’s know the basics
What is a Blog ?
A Blog is a discussion or informational website published on World Wide Web and consist of discrete entries also know as posts, displayed in reverse order.
In layman terms, a blog is a personal diary and displays the information in reverse direction i.e. you open from back to front.
Why should you create a blog ?
Just as I mentioned above, a blog is a simple personal diary which can be used to communicate and spread information and news. There are lots and lots of blogs online and are sharing their news and information.
You also become known online and offline because of your blog and your writing skills. With the help of blog you can express yourself without restrictions or boundaries.
Last but not the least, if you succeed, you can make money by blogging and lots of money from your blog.
The Steps Required
You can call them steps, but these are some basic things which a person needs to keep in mind before starting any blog. You can start your blog in less than five minutes or it can take up to a day depending upon what you choose and how you choose.
So the Steps
- Your Passion
- Blogging Platform
- Free Blog Vs Paid Blog
- Self Hosting (Your Own Domain/Identity)
- Themes and Designing
- Finishing Your Work and Resources for Your Blog
So, these are some of the basic requirements about blogging. As soon as you have all the information ready then you can easily start your blog. Let’s start with the steps
Step 1. Your Passion
First of all congratulations for thinking about making a blog. So, do you think you have anything special in you. Do you want the world to know more about yourself.
Do you want to succeed in life by sharing what you know. There are many bloggers, who have succeeded in life by sharing their knowledge online and they are known to many people around the world.
If you think you can be rich overnight by just copying and pasting stuff from different websites to your website, you are absolutely wrong. This is not 2008 , this is world of Panda and Penguin where in your website with copied stuff will be thrown in garbage bin of search engines like Google , Bing and Yahoo.
If you want to share true knowledge and great content then read along :
What is the thing that you love the most ? This should be first question which you should answer yourself. This is very important question which will decide the fate of your blog.
What do you love – If your answer is technology and you think you can easily write about technology and it’s updates then you should probably write about technology but if you look at one food blog and say that I want to open a food based blog , your blog will not work because you do not have a thing for food and what you will write would not be related to food very easily.
I am not saying that you can not write about food but there will not be such a passion in you as you would have a thing for technology.
Step 2 . What would be your blogging Platform
Choosing the right platform for your blog is probably the first thing which you will have to do. If you are starting fresh and have not heard of any blogging softwares, I would like to tell you that I have myself used Blogspot and moved to WordPress around 8 years ago and since then I have been using WordPress.
It is one of the most used blogging platforms in the world by people who host their own blog. What actually helps WordPress is the directory of Plugins and themes which can probably do anything which any other website can do.

WordPress in itself is a complete CMS, you can convert it to blog , news website , article directory, link directory, shopping website, comparison website, coupon website and anything that you can think of.
Then there are some other blogging platforms:
- Blogger(Blogspot) – Used it, pretty simple and basic features , can be used to blog initially and thereafter when you have good traffic, you should probably switch to WordPress.
- Tumblr — There are lots of Tumblr blogs and they are best for microbloggers.
I will sum up why I personally think that you should start blogging with WordPress.
- Very easy to set up
- You can choose the design and layout to suit your blog and your taste.
- There are tutorials available to modify the basic needs of website.
- You can use plugins to add additional features to your website.
- You can share your content to social media websites.
Step 3 – Free Blog or Paid Blog
This is the most crucial step in blogging , you will have to make a decision whether to remain on anyone else’s identity or have your own identity online. Blogger, WordPress and Tumblr offer you free blogging but there’s a catch.
All of the blogging platforms mentioned above give you option of free blogging with sub domains and will look like :
This is the catch, they are perfect for anyone who wants a sneak peak at blogging and that too for a short period of time. Although you can add a fully qualified domain to your blog in both tumblr and blogger free of cost but adding it in WordPress will cost you.
Then there are limits, and what are limits
- File & Storage Size Limits – Can not upload more than a fixed amount of file size and a total along with total storage capacity limit.
- Bandwidth Limits – Even if you blog at these websites, you get only a fixed amount of bandwidth for free after that your blog might be down.
- Less or No Monetization– Apart from Blogger none of above gives you option to add monetization options.
You do not own your own Content.
Basically, the blog you host with free blog providers remain their property. If you break their terms and service, your blog can be deleted and this has been done in past and could be done in future as well. This only means that even if you work hard on your blog, create good content, you are at the mercy of these websites.
Even if you use a custom domain i.e. Yourblog.com you will not be able to get url as you want.
The default blogger permalink is
The default wordpress permalink is
The default Tumblr Permalink is
Blogger does not give you option to use it’s software for blogging and neither does tumblr. Only option to have a self hosted blog is by using self hosted WordPress install on a web hosting service provider. These web hosting can be either free or paid.
Free Web Hosting Providers
There are some of the web hosting providers that offer some diskspace and bandwidth for free and you can start of your blog if you do not want to spend money on your blog initially. You will get the flexibility of using a custom domain( If you purchase ) or a subdomain of the web hosting provider.
They can also provide you backend to manage all your files, databases and doing modifications on the themes. But still there are some things to have in mind when you use a free web host to host your blog
There are some downsides to both Free Blog and a Free Hosting and we will be listing both of them.
Then there is an option of Paid Blog, which means that you pay to blog and WordPress.com is a good option if you want to have a paid blog. You will have to pay $99 per year for blogging on WordPress.com which will give you a custom domain mapped to your account, email support, an upgraded storage space and advanced customizations to your blog.
Step 4. Self Hosting (Your Domain)
Based on the above things you could have guessed that you might not get full flexibility even on the Premium Plans offered by WordPress. You still do not own the content that you write on their blogging platform.
Now comes the time when you should look for self hosting your own WordPress blog, and I bet that you would seriously love it.
So what is self-hosted Blog ?
A self-hosted blog is the version which you host with a web hosting company and purchase a domain for the identity of the blog. You basically lease the space online for your property and pay for that either monthly or annually as you want to and in return the web host gives you free to post and host anything which is of course not illegal in most countries.
You will need two different things in self-hosted version of WordPress and they are :
- Hosting Space – You can choose Hosting space from basically any web hosting company in this world which can run php, mysql and other basic things needed for WordPress to function normally.
- Domain Name – The domain name is the identity of your blog. Choose wisely because once you gain popularity, you may not be able to change your identity, and a fully qualified domain name becomes your home on the internet.
There are many web hosting companies which offer you web space on lease like SiteGround, Hostgator , Bluehost , HostMonster etc . Some offer free domain with their hosting if you purchase annual plans but if you go for monthly plans they might not offer you free domain.
These Web Hosting Companies offer One Click WordPress installs on your domains using Fantastico or Softaculous and you do not have to do anything else, everything has been configured automatically.
After installation, which takes around 1 minute or so depending on your web host, you need to go to your new wp-admin panel which would be usually situated at yourdomainname/wp-admin using the login and password which you signed up with and start adding a post.
As soon as you visit your blog or website, you would feel that your website is not what it should be. Do not worry you can beautify your site in the next step.
I Personally have used BlueHost, Hostgator, SiteGround to host my websites along with GoDaddy and the most of them were around the $7 mark per month if I signed up for longer term but usually went as high as $12, If I was having no-contract i.e. monthly payments.
For a new blogger, who is going to start his/her career I would not recommend monthly payments because It might be possible that during the next payment date, you do not have either your credit card with you or debit card might not work. You should always purchase web hosting at least for a year.
Step 5 : Design
Now comes the fun part where you would try to make your website as beautiful as you want to along with tons of features. The best part about WordPress is, you edit the theme and add plugin to make most of your required needs and you therefore do not need to make any changes in the WordPress Core, just install and activate a WordPress theme which you like and give your website a great personality.
What is a WordPress Theme
A WordPress Theme is a collection of files which uses some queries from the database and WordPress core files to display what you post on your blog/website.
How to Install WordPress Theme
Installing a WordPress theme is very easy, you need to head over to Appearance and click Add New or head over to yourDomain/wp-admin/themes.php. Here you will find the themes installed in your WordPress website.
If you do not want the pre-installed theme then you can add a theme of your choice by clicking Add New or yourdomain/wp-admin/theme-install.php. You should be logged into your WP-Admin to do any changes to your themes.
If you find a theme from your WordPress theme dashboard Click Install and then Activate and voila you are ready to rock the newly installed theme on your website.
The themes available from WordPress Repository are absolutely free of cost and they might also have their paid counterparts available at their respective designers website. If you like a free theme suitable to your blog and want more functionality than just bare-bones theme then contact your Theme Developer.
If you do not like any theme from WordPress Dashboard, then there are some quality theme websites or should I say Frameworks which will not only make your site beautiful but with come with options to modify the theme itself.
Also you should choose a WordPress theme which makes your content look clear, crisp and up to the standards of today’s websites. Also make sure that you choose a WordPress theme which is responsive to different display devices i.e. same theme shown to a mobile phone with 320p display and a computer with 2K display.
You can try themes from ThemeForest, StudioPress which made the Genesis Framework, then you can also try Thesis Framework. I would recommend here that you should go with Pro Plus Package of StudioPress Themes which allows you to install any theme that StudioPress themes have made till date and they will in future.
WordPress themes from Themeforest and theme frameworks mentioned above comes with a control panel to make necessary customization options to your theme. You can also choose Customizer to customize your website if your WordPress theme supports it.
Your website designs reflects both your personality and you, so you should choose a website design which your website reflects. If you want to blog about technology, then choose a template or wordpress theme which transforms your blog into technology blog. There is no point in choosing a food-related theme on technology blog.
Step 6 : Finishing Your Work and Resources for your Blog
Glad that you have made it so far, this means that you are committed in making your blog or website a successful venture.
What did we do till now ?
We started a blog on a custom domain, hosted it on a web host. Choose theme which resembles our personality and niche.
Most of the blog starting has been done and now it’s time for you to do something that will take your blog to next level and there are few things to take care of now which are

- Create Social Profiles on Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest, LinkedIn, Tumblr, Digg, StumbleUpon and all the other social media websites.
- Install Basic Plugins for your Blog

Conclusion and Verdict :
Do you know that there are more than 100 million blogs of WordPress alone which are self hosted and they are adding day by day. The addition of blogs will not stop but you can do wonders if you are committed along with a great writer.
Not everyone can make money online from blog , and you should remember this fact. Those who try to make money online quickly vanish in thin air as they appeared.
Neither does their blog create an identity nor do they make any sense. If you start a blog then make sure you should do it with your heart and full commitment. The key to a successful blog is content and hard work.
