Follow or no follow so what to follow

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

There is a buzz in blogosphere about what to do about Daddy Google’s not counting links that have no follow tags attached with them. The trend in 2005 was that bloggers used to visit others blog and leave valuable comments, this helped both the blogger and the visitor as the blogger used to get visitors while the visitor got the back link which would enhance the Page Rank of his blog. It was not long before spammers knew about this and they started spamming blogs with nothing but tons of links as a comment. Lots of spamming software were developed which would automatically find blogs with high page rank and the spam them. Every day the administrator had to spend time in deleting these comments. As soon as Google learnt about it, it direct Wordpress to add a no follow tag to their software that would help Google in not counting the links that were in comments while determining the page rank.no-follow-2x.gif

Was this method effective, blogging gurus suggest it wasn’t as Google still hasn’t been able to develop a logarithm to eliminate the counting of links in comment. However this fact is still not known to all bloggers and most bloggers have lost their valuable readers and readers have lost the opportunity to get some links that would help the site gain pr and traffic.
Well there is a change visible now, with people removing no follow tags from their blogs and regaining their traffic. It is due to software like akismet that spammers are easily caught and the bloggers can concentrate on what is most important to them- blogging.
