How to Block Websites

Wanna know how to block websites? Learn how to block websites with these step by step tutorials. But before we start  let’s first go through the results of survey that we conducted in later part of the year 2008.

Survey Results

In the survey that spanned a little over 3 months, we asked our readers the primary reason why they wanted to block certain websites. With participation over 12 thousand visitors, we got the top three results as follows

  1. Block websites to Prevent Children from viewing explicit content. : 4687 votes
  2. Block websites with excessive advertising and Pop Ups. 2589 votes
  3. Block websites because children spend more time on web than on studies 2258 votes.

With these results in mind , we developed these comprehensive tutorials for all out users.

Tutorial: How to Block Websites

This tutorial consists of three parts. In the first two parts we will cover how to block websites in two major web browsers: Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox. In the last part we would generalize the procedure and learn how to block websites in all the web browsers.

1. How to Block Websites in Internet Explorer.

There are three ways by which you can do Block Sites in Internet Explorer. We have listed each of them below.

First Method:

To block a website in Internet Explorer, follow the following steps.

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the Menu bar click Tools → Internet Options → Privacy.
  3. In the Privacy Box, click on”Sites” and type in all the sites that you want to block.

Second Method

Open Internet Explorer.

  1. In the Menu bar click Tools → Internet Options → Content
  2. Now click on Content Advisor → Enable and then select tab ‘approved websites’ to approve or disapprove any website.

Third Method

  1. Open Internet Explorer.
  2. In the Menu bar click Tools → Internet Options → Security
  3. Now Click on Restricted Sites →Sites and add sites you want to Block.

2. How to Block Websites in Mozilla Firefox

Firefox does not have any inbuilt feature to block websites, but with the help extensions we can add this feature easily.

Here are the suggested Firefox add-ons which can be used to block sites.

  1. Glubble : Great for Parental Control as it allows only those sites, which are authorized by the admistrator.
  2. BlockSite: BlockSite is an extension, which automagically blocks websites of your choice. Additionally, this extension will disable all hyperlinks to these websites, by just displaying the link text without the clicking functionality
  3. LeechBlock : Allows only Time limit web site usage.

3. How to Block Websites in All Web Browsers

You can block websites in all web browsers by two ways. First is by using Host Files and second is by using freely available spyware programs like OpenDNS.

Using Host Files to Block Sites

To block sites using Host Files, follow the following procedure.

  1. Click the Start button and select Run. Now type the following text in that Run box:
  2. notepad c:WINDOWSsystem32driversetchosts
  3. Navigate to the last line, press enter and add the following lines and save the file.

127.0.0.1 Xyz.com
127.0.0.1 example.com

.4.Replace the above sites with the one you want to block. Do not add the “http://”

With this technique you can block as many sites as you want to. If you want to unblock any of these sites just add # before 127.0.0.1 or simply delete the line itself.

Using OpenDNS to Block Websites : Highly Recommended

To use OpenDNS to block sites, you need to create an account at OpenDNS.com.

  1. Once you have created your account Click here to know how to set up OpenDNS.
  2. After setting up OpenDNS, login into your account and click on “settings” tab to select your Web filtering level.
  3. Save changes and enjoy.
