I have written many posts on SEO and SERPs previously and also focussed on Top 5 Beginner WordPress Mistakes that Amateur Make earlier along with many other things on WordPress.
I would like to tell you my story wherein I created a website on a holiday theme couple of years ago with all the knowledge of SERPS and SEO back then. I created the website in April thinking in mind about Halloween which happens in October that I will have enough search results which will give me desired results at the time of the event.
I was completely wrong, I did not get the desired traffic, although I was able to figure out in time what issues I had with that website. Today I am going to tell you what are the most common SEO mistakes that anyone can make and it can not only ruin your website rankings in search engines but destroy your business altogether.
Most Common SEO Mistakes
These are the most common seo mistakes which anyone can make. Whether you are building your first website or hundred, you should take care of these things as these small mistakes are done commonly and they can be easily rectified.
Not Using Keywords
If you want to start a business, you should always do keyword research, because any website you build should be around some keywords and if the website is not around any keywords that people usually search, you will end up building a website that is worthless to anyone.
This also holds true that you can also make a website around competitive keywords, which will be difficult to break as the top sites are not easy to displace. This will result in a long wait for you to see the desired results.
This was my mistake as well, I tried building a website based on highly competitive keyword Halloween Costumes for which I was not able to rank in Google Search but with few tweaks, I was able to get into good position on MSN and Yahoo.
What you should do is use the Google Adwords Keyword tool and find out the keywords which have low competition but high searches and try to build a website around that keyword. Also, try to search on Google to see what your competition actually is. If the competitor has built a good website then it will be hard for you to beat it.
Keyword Stuffing and Hidden Text
You should not
- Stuff keywords in your content
- Keywords should not be hidden or same color as the background of the page
- Do not add keywords which do not relate to your content
- Don’t overdo your keywords
You should only focus on creating good quality content with keywords which your visitors can relate to your website. You should also try to have keywords in few places like Title tags, heading tags, alt text of image and varied throughout the content but you should not overdo them.
If you have a website about gardening equipment, your site should not have keywords related to finance and loans.
Optimize HomePage Only
If you have plenty of visitors that are recurring then you should focus on your homepage but if you have quite a lot of pages and most of your traffic comes from search engines, then you should not focus only on the homepage.
A good approach to optimizing your blog or website could be choosing different keywords for each page on your blog or website. This will enable you to get much more traffic than you could have got if you concentrated only on homepage.
You can also try to implement less popular keywords in your web pages as it will allow all those searches to come to your website only for which there is absolutely no competition.
With Google Panda and Penguin update, Google made it pretty clear that they will be going after websites that sold links and they went after many big websites and dropped them from search results completely.
You should be aware of this and if you link to bad websites, your website could be penalized and this would have a detrimental effect on your ranking.
If you think that any outgoing link should not be indexed by any search engine then you should apply a no-follow attribute to that particular link, any good website should always be linked. You should always be careful of how many outgoing links are present on the webpage, having it at the bare minimum will help your website immensely.
An effective SEO strategy is always knowing about your competition even before you start to optimize your website. So, before you even start with any optimization of your website for any particular keyword or phrase, you should always look at the competing websites.
Almost 95% people searching on any search engine do not go past 2nd page on any search result so you should always enter your keywords in google without quotes and look at the first two pages of result. You should create a website that should be better than any of those mentioned on first two pages of Google.
If the above search results yield in any multinational company website with high page rank and thousands of backlinks then it would not be possible to compete with any website like this. You will not rank anytime soon in the first two pages.
It can easily be said that these websites of multinational companies can spend more money than you can ever think of, so be careful and select good keywords where your competition is only websites from the general public which you can compete with.
Poor Navigation or Poor Website Structure
You should properly link each and every page on your website accordingly and have them interlinked accordingly. Following anything which is not according to procedure could mean a catastrophic error for your website.
Using an XML or HTML sitemap will ensure that search engines can easily navigate to all the pages on your websites and even index related pages from one another.
Last but not least, one thing everyone forgets is you should never forget offsite optimization. Offsite Optimization typically refers to getting backlinks from good quality websites using your defined keywords and their variations.
If you get good backlinks to your website, your website will then rise in the SERP and eventually have good Domain Authority. You should always try to build backlinks over time because if you try to get them quickly, your domain could be flagged and eventually result in demotion from search engine ranks.
The are some of the SEO mistakes that anyone can avoid and get good results in search engine rankings for their website.
Now I was telling about my website, I created a Halloween Website in April a couple of years ago without
- Looking at Google Adwords Keyword Tool
- Looking at my competitors
- Optimizing for mobile
- Did not properly optimize initially
Eventually, I figured out why the website was not getting indexed in Google and other search engines along with a couple of reasons. For highly competitive keywords, the website was nowhere to rank in the searches as I missed out on the opportunity. Once I realized my mistakes I optimized the website for low competition keywords and then website did perform wonderfully during that Halloween.
Later I sold that website.
Well, I hope this article will guide you in not making mistakes about SEO techniques which you should use on your website.
