There are three main Blogging Platforms used by bloggers across the world and they are
- Blogger aka Blogspot.com owned by Google
- WordPress.com owned by Automattic

There are many other blogging platforms but they are limited in numbers like
- Wix – also used to host websites
- Squarespace – also hosts website
- Drupal – Known for CMS
The above platforms are either new or have limited number of extensions to support what WordPress self-hosted has got and this is the reason why we are not going to discuss these platforms here.

Which one is better for Blogging WordPress or Blogger?
This is an ongoing debate from the past 12 years as which platform is better than which platform and this debate will never end because of features of both the platforms. Many users like Blogspot or Blogger due to the simplicity of just signing up for a Google Account and doing everything with one single account.
Others think that WordPress (not talking about self-hosted) is better due to its simplicity of doing things. Everything is in order and you can do many things with your WordPress blog as well.
What is my answer – It is very simple.
Try both the blogging platforms for a month or two and if choose according to your preference.
I started my blog on Blogger in 2006 and WordPress in 2007 when blogging was just beginning to start and there were not many options to go for. Later I switched over to self-hosted WordPress for my own good and now it has been around a decade on self-hosted WordPress.
WordPress or BlogSpot: Which blogging platform to choose?
Reasons for Choosing Blogger or Blogspot
The Blogspot Platform or Blogger is very easy to use and follow when you want to start a blog to share your thoughts and emotions. If you are a blogger who wants to choose a simple platform which does not require any technical knowledge then you should start with Blogger/Blogspot.
This also holds true in case you do not want to earn money with Blogger or Blogspot blogs or If you want to start blogging without any investment then also you can choose this platform.
Reasons for Not Choosing Blogger Blogs
If you want to build a professional blog or a blog with authority or even want to brand yourself, you should not choose Blogspot blogs. There is a limitation of things that you can get with your blog on Blogspot including the limitation of the title of your post etc.
Blogspot Blogs are also not good for SEO purposes. Each and every title includes date which is not good for SEO because Search Engines do not like old content from blogs. Well SEO has to be configured for the whole website and also individual posts, which Blogger or Blogspot blogs do not allow.
In layman terms, if you are OK with a limited set of features being offered by Blogger or Blogspot Platform and creating the blog just for fun, then you should definitely try Blogger Platform. For other reasons or long-term benefits, you should avoid it.
Reasons for Choosing WordPress
Please note the WordPress I am talking about is the Self-hosted version of WordPress, not the version hosted by WordPress.com
WordPress will give you total control over your blog. Basically, you need to purchase a domain and hosting space to point your website or blog and you can do whatever you want to with it. You can convert your blog into anything you like, a media website with lots of videos, a membership website with member section, a music player website with audio.
The sky is the limit and also your server resources on control of your website.
Since you control everything, you need to take care of SEO aspect of the website, which will make sure it gets its reach in search engines. You can turn WordPress into SEO friendly after adding numerous plugins.
You can even beautify it with countless themes present both free and paid.
Reason for Not Choosing WordPress
Well, there is not a single reason why anyone would not choose self-hosted WordPress. It gives you total control over everything you ever dreamt of but there are some things you need to understand which might deter you to go to Self Hosted WordPress.
- Some Technical Know-how of how things work
- In case any wrong configuration then the site will not work.
- WordPress is resource hogger meaning over time website will be slow.
If you have ever worked with PHP language then you will know your way out of any issues that WordPress may give you in future, but until then you will have to trust anyone else to work for you.
Over time your WordPress blogs become slow due to the accumulation of garbage data in your MySQL database which needs to be cleaned so that your website may run smoothly. This holds true if you are running many plugins on your website.
If you are a small blogger, just starting with your blogging career and do not have to worry about traffic or earnings online then you can definitely go with blogger platform. It is simple yet powerful to give you a headstart in your blogging career.
WordPress, on the other hand, will give you total control over everything you would like to post, your blogs design, functionality, SEO aspect. It is amazing when you are looking to get a professional blog or a business blog or even want to earn money from the blog.
You will have to decide why you want to start a blog?
You can always move from Blogger to WordPress once you are convinced that WordPress will be the way for you.
