Some Essential Settings for Beginners
When you install WordPress for the first time on a domain, sub domain or a directory either online or offline, all of these settings should be updated as per your needs. These are few things to be taken care of:
Deleting Default Content
When you install WordPress for the first time , it contains three things
- A Hello World Post
- A Sample Page
- A Comment on Hello World Post
You should make sure that all three are deleted as soon as possible because they are default post, page and comment respectively, which do not make sense in any website.
Some people install WordPress, they delete Hello World post because it is in-front of them but forget to delete Sample Page and realise later.
Setting Up WordPress Permalinks
The other thing which needs to be taken care of is WordPress permalinks which is the full url of the blog posts. By default the permalink structure is as
This permalink(short form for permanent link) is short but not Search Engine Friendly and you want search engines friendly website , not exactly opposite website.
Head over to Settings >>Permalinks and set up the permalinks as you like. The most common permalinks used are
These are the best permalinks to be used in any website or blog, because it not only makes less database queries but also helps you to get higher rankings in search engines due to keywords.
By default , the user registration is not allowed on any WordPress install, but you should double check it so that you do not get spam registrations anytime.
If you have a multi-author blog or website, you as an administrator should check this feature, as you will get quality posts and content. Do make sure that you do not open registrations for general public as it will be difficult to manage spam users.
Comments and Discussions
This is the very important section, which you need to take care of. You as an administrator of the website should not only interact with genuine readers in the comments section but also help them out.
This will not only increase your reputation but also will help you to gain more popularity.

The WordPress owned Ping-o-matic does the job absolutely fine and informs around 20 odd ping servers automatically whenever you update or post.
Just to make sure that your blog contains this section head over to
Settings >> Writing
and check the Update Services. If you want to ping update services yourself, you can do so by adding multiple ping servers which are listed on WordPress Update Services.
The last setting which is not so important but can play a part is the Time Zone Settings.
You should always select your home time zone, and it is for a reason that you can schedule post according to your time zone, without worrying about a date. In case you are out of the city or town, this feature can be beneficial.
